- Learn about power and strategy
- Mentor younger youth
Some Examples of Hope Opportunities:
Specific activities may change, but overall goals are included in all the projects.
| Mural project Hope staff that work on these projects teach both art skills and leadership. Youth learn the skill of putting together a mural from start to finish. Through this project youth also learn about themselves and their community. They learn about how power works, the challenges of making decision, and how to get others involved by recruiting other youth to be involved in the project. | |
| Hip Hop Project A on-going project dealing with the art of rapping traditionally known as MCing. Youth are taught about song structure, confidence, discipline, creativity in writing, and vocal projection. The first half of the class is devoted to preparation and the second half done in the studio. At the end of the project the youth produce a recorded CD of their work. Through this project youth are able to tell stories. The culminating event is a public presentation of their work. | |
| Peace Jam In 2005 teens participated in Peace Jam, an educational program built around the vision of leading Nobel Peace laureates. The group explored topics like what is a service learning project? What are the causes of violence? What is culture? What is racism? The culminating event for this project was a conference at St. Thomas University where the youth came together to share their service learning projects and meet Nobel peace prize winner Rigoberta Menchu Tum |
