A Building that Symbolizes all that Hope Stands for
The presence of the Children’s Village Center makes a statement. Warm and inviting colors create a sense of home. People in the community tell us that it gives them hope to see the beautiful building where there was only devastation for so long.
The mixed-use building is at the end of the Hope Block and has changed the face of this part of the Phillips neighborhood. It is the first phase of the Franklin Portland Gateway project and is a central part of our community engagement work that builds deep relationships in the community.
Every week children and youth, teens and young adults, parents, Hope staff, teachers and artists, volunteers, Hope tenants, and neighborhood residents come together at the Children’s Village Center. Families come to new apartment homes, neighbors share dinner, families celebrate together, young people speak as community leaders, volunteers read with young children, other youth create documentaries, adults practice English…this is a typical day at the building’s community center.
The first floor of the four-story building houses Hope’s offices, a community center and property management offices. There are 30 rental units of affordable housing on the three upper floors. The community center serves as a focal point of the area and provides a setting for year-round programs. Hundreds of people from the neighborhood and beyond are involved in leadership opportunities, art and community projects, community-based education, community and cultural events and Community Listening.
The Children’s Village Center began the transformation of the major intersection at Franklin and Portland Avenues and assured Hope’s continuing presence and influence in the future.
